An informed buyer is a happy buyer and here at NJOI Trujillo we work hard to ensure each buyer is thrilled with their new purchase. In our last post, we covered the three most commonly asked questions about buying property in Honduras. In part two, we answer the frequently asked questions that look a little deeper into the process of buying beach properties in Honduras.
What are real estate and property taxes like in Honduras?
Property owners worldwide have to worry about real estate and property taxes and buyers in the Honduras market also need to be aware of local regulations. When you buy property, there is a land transfer tax, which amounts to 1.5% of the value of the property in question. Property tax, which is paid annually, is comparatively low. You can expect to pay approximately $500 per year.
Can foreign buyers obtain residency or citizenship in Honduras?
In short, yes, you can obtain residency in Honduras. While Americans can stay in the area for six consecutive months, there are a couple of ways you can obtain residency. First, retirees who earn at least $1,500 a month can apply for Retirement Residency. If you invest at least $50,000 in Honduras, you can also qualify for Investor’s Residency.
What is the cost of living?
Cost of living is a big factor for many people looking to buy beach properties in Honduras. We are pleased to say that, compared to Canada, the cost of living in Honduras is 35.26% lower. Rent alone, on the other hand, is a staggering 60.47% lower, making Honduras one of the more affordable areas in the Tropics.
How do you get to Honduras?
Getting to Honduras is pretty simple. Several airlines from North America make connections to one of the two main airports in Honduras, for example. Both airports are within a relatively short distance from our beach properties in Honduras. You can also make getting to Honduras a vacation in itself by taking a cruise through the Caribbean to the newly constructed marina. Both methods provide safe travel, beautiful views, and the opportunity to live in a tropical paradise.
